Abstract

|
Objectives : This research aimed to develop a new etiologic classification for traditional Korean Medicine in order to respond tothesocialandenvironmentalchange.
Methods : We reviewed the existing theories on etiologicalclassification forEastAsian Medicine thoroughly anddiscussedtheproblemsand limitations.Basedontheexperts’consensus,weabstracted diseasefactorsandetiologicitems.
Results : Thediseasefactorsareclassifiedintothreeparts:thehumanbody,theenvironment,andthe interaction between thehuman body and theenvironment.Wedefined them astheinnerfactor,the externalfactor,andtheinteractionbetweentheinnerandtheexternalfactors.Theinnerfactorisfree from theinfluenceoftheenvironment,anditcausesdiseasessolelyfrom thecomponentsofthehuman body.Itisdividedintogeneticfactors.Theexternalfactorisdefinedasacasewhenadiseaseoccurs dueto a factoroutside thehuman body and includes externalinjuries,environmentalpollution,and naturaldisasters.Theinteraction between theinnerand theexternalfactorsisadiseasefactorthat causes diseases bytheinteractionofthehumanbodyandtheenvironmentandincludesemotions,habits,andsocialenvironment.Asaresultoftheanalysis,itwaspossibletoseethemeaningsatasingle glanceasthescatteredandfractionalmeaningswereintegratedwithfocusonmedicinalherbs,butthe increasingnumberofanalyzedmedicinalherbstendedtomoreandmorecomplicatetheirrelationships,thus,requiringadditionalworklikefiltering.
Conclusions : Thenew etiologicclassificationofKoreanMedicinefullyreflectstheperspectivesonlife in Korean Medicinewhileembracing thechangesin modern society.Also,by avoiding theusageof ambivalenttermsandwrongclassificationmethods,thenew classificationsystem constructsintuitiveand conciseetiologyandimprovesusabilityinclinicalmedicine
